What can be used as an alternative to the A260 measurement for quantification of small amounts of RNA and DNA?
Small amounts of RNA and DNA may be difficult to measure spectrophotometrically. Fluorometric measurements, or quantitative RT-PCR and PCR are more sensitive and accurate methods to quantify low amounts of RNA or DNA.
Fluorometric measurements are carried out using nucleic acid binding dyes, such as RiboGreen® RNA Quantitation Reagent for RNA, and PicoGreen® DNA Quantitation Reagent for DNA (Molecular Probes, Inc.).

RNeasy Universal Kits
The RNeasy Plus Universal Mini Kit integrates fast, convenient RNA purification with effective elimination of genomic DNA. Optimized protocols enable purification of high-quality RNA from any type of tissue, even difficult-to-lyse tissues. The kit includes QIAzol Lysis Reagent for lysing fatty tissue and other types of tissue and RNeasy spin columns for purifying high-quality RNA. The RNeasy Plus Universal Mini Kit can be automated on the QIAcube Connect. The RNeasy 96 Universal Tissue Kit enables total RNA purification in 96-well format from any tissue. Tissues are efficiently lysed and homogenized in QIAzol Lysis Reagent, and high-quality RNA is purified using silica-membrane RNeasy 96 plates. Manual purification is carried out using the QIAGEN Centrifuge 4-16KS and, optionally, the QIAvac 96 vacuum manifold. Automated purification using the related RNeasy 96 Universal Tissue 8000 Kit is performed on the BioRobot Universal System. Tissue samples can be conveniently stabilized using Allprotect Tissue Reagent, and efficiently disrupted using the TissueLyser II. Nonfatty tissues can be stabilized using the RNAprotect Tissue Reagent.
RNeasy Kits
RNeasy Kits are the gold standard for total RNA isolation. They provide fast purification of high-quality RNA from small to large amounts of cells, tissues, and yeast using silica membrane RNeasy spin columns or 96-well plates. Tissue samples can be conveniently stabilized using RNAprotect Tissue Reagent or Allprotect Tissue Reagent, and efficiently disrupted using a TissueRuptor II or TissueLyser II or LT system. The RNeasy 96 Kit enables high-throughput purification of total RNA from up to 96 cultured cell samples using silica membrane RNeasy 96 plates. A dedicated RNeasy QIAcube Kit enables automated purification of 1–12 samples on the QIAcube Connect.
QIAamp Viral RNA Kits
QIAamp Viral RNA Kits simplify viral RNA purification from cell-free body fluids with fast spin-column, vacuum and plate centrifugation procedures. Viral RNA binds specifically to the QIAamp silica membrane, and pure viral RNA is eluted in either water or a buffer provided with the kit. Purification can be fully automated on the QIAcube Connect using the QIAamp Viral RNA Mini Kit or dedicated QIAamp Viral RNA Mini QIAcube Kit. Various options for automation of the QIAamp 96 Viral Kit on instruments including the QIAcube HT, the Fluent 780 from Tecan or the epMotion 5075V from Eppendorf support high to ultra-high throughput processing with minimal hands-on time.
QIAamp Viral RNA Mini and QIAamp 96 Viral RNA standard protocols can also be executed using the TRACKMAN Connected system, paired with PIPETMAN M Connected pipettes, both from Gilson. QIAamp DNA Blood Kits
QIAamp DNA Blood Kits provide silica-membrane-based DNA purification from whole blood, plasma, serum and other body fluids. The kits are designed for a range of sample sizes from 200 μl up to 10 ml fresh or frozen human whole blood. QIAamp spin columns can be easily processed in a centrifuge or on vacuum manifolds. A convenient 96-well format using centrifugation enables purification of DNA for labs that need high-throughput DNA purification from blood, buffy coat, plasma, serum, bone marrow, lymphocytes and body fluids. A dedicated kit is also available for automated purification of 1–12 samples on the QIAcube Connect.
QIAamp DNA Kits
QIAamp DNA Kits provide silica-membrane-based nucleic acid purification from tissues, swabs, CSF, blood, body fluids or washed cells from urine. In addition, genomic and mitochondrial DNA can be purified from small amounts of fresh or frozen blood, tissue and dried blood spots. Mechanical homogenization is not required as the tissues are lysed enzymatically. DNA purification from 1–12 samples can be automated on the QIAcube Connect using the dedicated QIAamp DNA Mini QIAcube Kit. Purification of DNA using the QIAamp DNA Micro Kit and QIAamp DNA Mini Kit is also automatable on the QIAcube Connect.
QIAamp DNA Mini standard protocols can also be executed using the TRACKMAN Connected system.
QIAamp Circulating Nucleic Acid Kit
The QIAamp Circulating Nucleic Acid Kit greatly simplifies concentration and purification of free-circulating DNA and RNA from plasma or serum.The kit can be automated on the QIAcube Connect.
RNeasy Protect Animal Blood System
The RNeasy Protect Animal Blood System provides a complete solution for preparing high-quality RNA from animal blood. Blood from mouse, rat, and other small animals is conveniently collected in RNAprotect Animal Blood Tubes, which contain a reagent that immediately stabilizes cellular RNA. Total RNA is then purified using the RNeasy Protect Animal Blood Kit. Please note that the RNeasy Protect Animal Blood Kit and the RNAprotect Animal Blood Tubes are ordered separately.Alternatively, the RNeasy Protect Animal Blood Kit can be used to obtain microRNA (miRNA), either in a total RNA fraction or in a separate small RNA fraction. For purification of total RNA containing miRNA, Buffer RWT (cat. no. 1067933) is also required. For purification of small RNA (containing miRNA) and large RNA in 2 separate fractions, the RNeasy MinElute Cleanup Kit (cat. no. 74204) is also required. QIAamp One-For-All Nucleic Acid Kit
The QIAamp One-For-All Nucleic Acid Kit provides automated purification of viral nucleic acids or genomic DNA on the BioRobot MDx or the BioRobot Universal System using proven QIAamp technology. The fully automated procedure requires less than 2.5 hours, including bar code reading and complete process documentation, with no hands-on time during the run. The QIAamp One-For-All Nucleic Acid Kit enables processing of different samples (e.g., viral RNA and DNA from serum, genomic DNA from blood) in the same run.
QIAamp Investigator BioRobot Kit
The QIAamp Investigator BioRobot Kit provides automated DNA purification from up to 96 samples (such as filters, casework or crime-scene samples, and blood) or up to 192 swabs on the BioRobot Universal System using proven QIAamp silica-membrane technology. The fully automated procedure on the BioRobot Universal System requires less than 3 hours, including bar code reading, sample tracking and complete process documentation, with no hands-on time during the run. The purified DNA performs well in downstream analyses, such as quantitative PCR and STR analysis, with high signal-to-noise ratios.
RNeasy Plus Kits
RNeasy Plus Kits are next generation QIAGEN RNA extraction kits, combining high-quality RNA purification with effective gDNA removal with unique gDNA Eliminator columns or plates. Total RNA of high purity and yield is obtained from a wide range of cultured cells and easy-to-lyse tissues. The RNeasy Plus Micro Kit is specially designed for limited amounts of samples and isolates up to 45 µg pure total RNA The RNeasy Plus Mini Kit purifies up to 100 µg total RNA (>200 nt) from a single extraction with efficient gDNA removal. Both kits can be automated on the QIAcube Connect and samples can be conveniently stabilized using RNAprotect Tissue Reagent or Allprotect Tissue Reagent and efficiently disrupted using a TissueRuptor II or TissueLyser II or LT system (available separately). QIAamp DNA Investigator Kit
The QIAamp DNA Investigator Kit provides purification of genomic DNA from a wide range of forensic and human identity samples, such as casework samples, including dried blood, bone, and sexual assault samples, swabs, and filters. The kit uses QIAamp MinElute spin columns for purification of high-quality DNA with flexible elution volumes. Purification is fast and efficient, and purified DNA performs well in downstream analyses, such as quantitative PCR and STR analysis, with high signal-to-noise ratios. Purification of DNA using the QIAamp DNA Investigator Kit can be automated on the QIAcube Connect. The QIAamp DNA Investigator Kit meets ISO 18385 requirements.
QIAamp DNA FFPE Tissue Kit
The QIAamp DNA FFPE Tissue Kit is specially designed for purifying DNA from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections. The kit uses special lysis conditions to release DNA from tissue sections and to overcome inhibitory effects caused by formalin crosslinking of nucleic acids. The kit uses QIAamp MinElute spin columns for purification of high-quality DNA in small volumes. Purification of DNA using the QIAamp DNA FFPE Tissue Kit can be automated on the QIAcube Connect.

QIAamp MinElute Virus Kits
QIAamp MinElute Virus Kits simplify viral DNA and RNA purification with fast spin-column and vacuum procedures. The kits use starting sample volumes of up to 0.2 ml and combine the selective binding properties of a silica-based membrane with flexible elution volumes of between 20 and 150 μl. The QIAamp MinElute Virus Spin process can be fully automated on the QIAcube Connect. The additional buffers and reagents in the QIAamp MinElute Virus Accessory are required for automation of the QIAamp MinElute Virus Spin procedure.
RNeasy Protect Kits
RNeasy Protect Mini Kits enable stabilization of RNA in tissue samples, RNA and DNA in sorted or cultured cells, RNA in human saliva samples and RNA in bacterial samples. The RNeasy Protect Mini Kit and Bacteria Mini Kit include RNeasy spin columns for purifying up to 100 µg of high-quality RNA using silica-membrane technology. DNeasy Blood & Tissue Kits
DNeasy Blood & Tissue Kits quickly extract DNA using a silica-based, phenol- and chloroform-free process in spin-column and 96-well-plate formats. For most samples, direct lysis with proteinase K eliminates the need for mechanical disruption, reducing hands-on time. Tailored protocols for specific samples ensure consistent extraction of high-quality DNA, perfect for life science, genotyping, and veterinary pathogen research. Kits can be automated on QIAcube Connect.
For a more sustainable alternative, the QIAwave DNA Blood & Tissue Kit, reduces plastic and cardboard usage by up to 62% and 58%, respectively. The kit includes waste tubes made from 100% recycled plastic, which can be reused throughout the procedure. QIAwave buffers are concentrated, decreasing plastic use in each bottle by up to 90%. Despite visual differences, the QIAwave Kit remains as user-friendly as the standard kit, with identical chemistry and performance. Note: Sterile glass bottles are required for buffer reconstitution.

The RNeasy FFPE Kit is specially designed for purifying total RNA from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections. Special lysis and incubation conditions reverse formaldehye modification of RNA. In addition, the lysis buffer efficiently releases RNA from tissue sections while avoiding further RNA degradation. The kit also uses DNase and DNase Booster Buffer for optimized removal of genomic DNA contamination. The RNeasy Plant Mini Kit includes QIAshredder spin columns for homogenizing and filtering viscous plant or fungal lysates, and RNeasy spin columns for purifying up to 100 μg of high-quality RNA using silica-membrane technology. Purification can be fully automated on the QIAcube Connect. The kit can also be used in combination with a TissueRuptor or TissueLyser system, which provide efficient disruption and homogenization of plant samples.
RNeasy MinElute Cleanup Kit
The RNeasy MinElute Cleanup Kit enables cleanup and concentration of RNA from enzymatic reactions or other samples using specialized RNeasy MinElute spin columns based on silica-membrane technology. The kit can also be used to desalt RNA samples. Up to 45 µg RNA can be purified in a volume as low as 10 µl. Purification can be fully automated on the QIAcube Connect.
RNeasy Lipid Tissue Mini Kit

QIAamp UltraSens Virus Kit
The QIAamp UltraSens Virus Kit uses a novel technology to concentrate viral nucleic acids in plasma and serum samples, followed by nucleic acid purification using proven QIAamp technology. Starting with sample volumes of up to 1 ml, nucleic acid concentration is achieved by first adding a novel reagent to the sample. The reagent forms complexes with nucleic acids, allowing them to be highly concentrated by low-speed centrifugation.
QIAamp RNA Blood Mini Kit
The QIAamp RNA Blood Mini Kit provides silica-membrane-based purification of cellular RNA from up to 1.5 ml of fresh, whole human blood stabilized with any common anticoagulant, such as citrate, heparin, or EDTA. QIAamp DNA Blood BioRobot MDx Kit

QIAamp 96 DNA Swab BioRobot Kit
The QIAamp 96 DNA Swab BioRobot Kit provides automated DNA purification from up to 192 swabs on the BioRobot Universal System using proven QIAamp silica-membrane technology. Up to 192 samples are processed in less than 2.5 hours. The procedure is optimized for use with air-dried swabs with plastic shafts and cotton or DACRON tips, although other swab types can be used.
DNeasy Plant Kits
The DNeasy Plant Kits provide fast and easy silica-based DNA isolation from plant samples in spin column format. Typical yields are 3–260 μg of high-quality DNA, depending on the samples used (e.g., wheat, maize, Arabidopsis, tomato, tobacco) and binding capacity of the DNeasy silica membrane. The DNeasy Plant Kits also provide silica-based DNA purification in a convenient 96-well plate format with typical yields of 1–15 μg DNA, depending on the plant species. Blood & Cell Culture DNA Kits
Blood & Cell Culture DNA Kits provide gravity-flow, anion-exchange tips and buffers for efficient isolation of genomic DNA from a wide range of biological samples. The purified DNA is sized up to 150 kb with an average size of 50–100 kb.
The purchase of the Genomic DNA Buffer Set (cat.no. 19060) is required for yeast and bacteria samples.
QIAwave RNA Mini Kit
The QIAwave RNA Mini Kit is an eco-friendlier version of our standard RNeasy Mini Kit. The kit uses up to 60% less plastic and up to 57% less cardboard than our standard kit and offers waste tubes made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic that you can reuse throughout the procedure. QIAwave buffers also come as concentrates, reducing the amount of plastic by up to 90% per bottle. To save paper, there are no printed protocols in the kit. Instead, you can download the protocols you need from the resources list or by simply scanning the QR code inside the box lid. So, while the kit packaging and components of our QIAwave Kit may look different, it’s as easy to use as the RNeasy Mini Kit, and the chemistry and performance are identical.
Please be aware that you will need sterile glass bottles to store the reconstituted buffers.
