FAQ-3990
Are the QIAwave kits based on a different chemistry than the legacy kits?
No, the chemistry between the QIAwave kits and the legacy kits is the same, and so is the performance. The QIAwave buffers come as concentrates, reducing the amount of plastic per bottle while maintaining the same functionality after reconstitution. The advantage of the QIAwave kits is the reduction of materials used for the kits, such as plastics, cardboard and paper. In addition, the QIAwave kits contain Waste Tubes made from 100% post-consumer plastic.

QIAwave DNA/RNA Mini Kit
The QIAwave DNA/RNA Mini Kit is a more eco-friendly version of our standard AllPrep DNA/RNA Mini Kit designed for purifying both genomic DNA and total RNA from the same cell or tissue sample. Since there is no need to divide the sample into two for separate purification procedures, maximum yields of DNA and RNA can be achieved. The purified DNA and RNA are eluted separately and ready to use in any downstream application.
The QIAwave DNA/RNA Mini Kit uses 52% less plastic and 58% less cardboard than our standard kit and offers Waste Tubes made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic that you can reuse throughout the procedure. QIAwave buffers also come as concentrates, reducing the amount of plastic by up to 90% per bottle. To save paper, there are no printed protocols in the kit. Instead, you can download the protocols you need from the resources list or by simply scanning the QR code inside the box lid. So, while the kit packaging and components of our QIAwave DNA/RNA Mini Kit may look different, it’s as easy to use as the AllPrep DNA/RNA Mini Kit, and the chemistry and performance are identical.
Please be aware that you will need sterile glass bottles to store the reconstituted buffers.
In partnership with My Green Lab, we've assessed the environmental impact of this kit. My Green Lab ACT labels evaluate and score products on several sustainability criteria:
Manufacturing
Responsible chemical management
Sustainable content within products and packaging materials
Disposal of the packaging at the end of life
Products are scored from 1 to 10 except for energy and water consumption, which are scored 1 point per kWh or gallon, respectively. A low score means a lower impact (see figures "QIAwave DNA/RNA Mini Kit ACT label US, EU and UK").
QIAwave RNA Plus Mini Kit
The QIAwave RNA Plus Mini Kit is a more eco-friendly version of our standard RNeasy Plus Mini Kit, combining high-quality RNA purification with effective gDNA removal using unique gDNA Eliminator columns. Total RNA of high purity and yield is obtained from a wide range of cultured cells and easy-to-lyse tissues.
The QIAwave RNA Plus Mini Kit uses up to 47% less plastic and up to 42% less cardboard than our standard kit and offers Waste Tubes made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic that you can reuse throughout the procedure. QIAwave buffers also come as concentrates, reducing the amount of plastic by up to 90% per bottle. To save paper, there are no printed protocols in the kit. QIAwave DNA Blood & Tissue Kit
The QIAwave DNA Blood & Tissue Kit is an eco-friendlier version of our standard DNeasy Blood & Tissue Kit. The kit uses up to 62% less plastic and up to 58% less cardboard than our standard kit and waste tubes made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic that you can reuse throughout the procedure. QIAwave buffers come as concentrates, reducing the amount of plastic by up to 90% per bottle. To save paper, there are no printed protocols in the kit. You can download the protocols from Resources or scan the QR code on the kit lid. While the packaging and components of our QIAwave Kit may look different, it’s as easy to use as our standard kit, and the chemistry and performance are identical. Please note that you will need sterile glass bottles to reconstitute the buffers.

The QIAwave Kit uses silica-based spin-columns for purification, and most samples can be lysed directly with proteinase K. This means:
• No mechanical disruption• No organic extraction• No alcohol precipitation
The standard protocol allows you to extract total DNA from animal blood and tissue. We’ve also developed protocols for other sample types to ensure you get reproducible quantities of high-quality DNA, whether you’re working in life science, genotyping or veterinary pathogen research. You can also automate your sample extraction on the QIAcube Connect.
QIAwave Plasmid Miniprep Kit
The QIAwave Plasmid Miniprep Kit is an eco-friendlier version of our standard QIAprep Spin Miniprep Kit. The QIAwave Kit uses up to 22% less plastic and up to 14% less cardboard than our standard kit and offers waste tubes made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic that you can reuse throughout the procedure. QIAwave buffers come as concentrates, reducing the amount of plastic by up to 93% per bottle. To save paper, there are no printed protocols in the kit. You can download the protocols from the resources list or scan the QR code inside the kit box. Although the kit packaging and components of our QIAwave Kit may look different, it’s as easy to use as our standard kit, and the chemistry and performance are identical.

The QIAwave Plasmid Miniprep Kit is designed to isolate up to 20 μg high-purity plasmid or cosmid DNA for routine molecular biology applications, including fluorescent and radioactive sequencing and cloning. You can achieve even higher yields (up to 30 μg) using the QIAprep High-Yield Supplementary Protocol. We recommend using this kit with the QIAvac 24 Plus for optimal results.
