for meningitis and encephalitis
Meningitis and encephalitis are central nervous system (CNS) infections with considerable morbidity and mortality. Timely and accurate diagnoses are crucial for managing these infections, including appropriately isolating patients and initiating targeted treatment. Meningitis/encephalitis (M/E) syndromic panel testing makes it possible to identify a wide range of CNS pathogens quickly.
Join Dr. Xiaohui Nielsen as she delves into recently published clinical evaluations of M/E syndromic panels, as well as her own experiences using the Filmarray ME Panel and the QIAstat-Dx Meningitis/Encephalitis Panel at a regional clinical microbiology lab in Denmark. She’ll discuss how results from the literature and her institution show that M/E panels generally have relatively high accuracy and contribute to better patient management. As false positive and false negative results can occur, Dr. Nielsen will also discuss the caveats of these tests and explain how clinical microbiologists should interpret the results from M/E panels in the context of the individual patient.
