Next-generation metagenomics of the human microbiome: from bench to bedside (North & South America - West)
Metagenomic analysis of the human microbiome has uncovered multiple links between our microbial complement and our health. However, several challenges remain on the road to completely unravel the diversity of the human microbiome and to exploit it within personalized medicine strategies. Such challenges include the characterization of the inter- and intra-personal variability of the human microbiome, of its extensive genetic diversity, and of its still hidden components. In my talk I will introduce such challenges and discuss how large-scale high-resolution integrative metagenomics can address them and have an impact on biomedical applications.
About the speaker
Nicola Segata, Professor and Principal Investigator, CIBIO
University of Trento, Trento Italy
Nicola Segata is a Professor and Principal Investigator in the CIBIO Department at the University of Trento, Italy and Principal Investigator at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Italy. His lab employs experimental metagenomic tools and novel computational approaches to study the diversity of the microbiome across conditions and populations and its role in human diseases. The projects in the lab bring together computer scientists, microbiologists, statisticians and clinicians.
