Sample to Insight COVID-19 wastewater testing

There's growing evidence that successful detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater or natural sewage is a powerful surveillance tool to prevent a surge in COVID-19 infections, and specifically of new variants that are gaining ground in certain communities. QIAGEN supports wastewater-based epidemiology efforts with research tools spanning nucleic acid extraction, amplification and detection, overcoming some of the common challenges with the analytical protocols along the workflow.

Rapid genotyping of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern

A number of concerning lineages classified as VOCs are associated with either higher transmissibility, virulence or ability to evade the immune response gained through prior infection or vaccination. The mutations in the viral genome of these variants are associated with change in 'fitness' or are unique to their lineage and can therefore be used as genetic markers for genotyping. It allows discriminating from the wild-type strain or other variants. Confronting these new variants demands constant surveillance and accelerated development of innovative early-detection tools.

Innovative PCR solution for epidemiological research

Pyrosequencing for COVID-19 genotyping

The prevalence of variants must be rapidly detected and reported to keep pace with the mutating SARS-CoV-2 virus. NGS is the current gold standard for genotyping of SARS-CoV-2; however, it is not feasible to genotype samples in real-time on a population-wide scale. RT-qPCR assays could provide an alternative approach that supplements NGS surveillance activities with its ability to genotype all SARS-CoV-2 cases on the day that it is detected. However, it is time-consuming to develop new assays for each emerging mutation, leading to potential delays in surveillance. The Pyrosequencing method presents a cost-effective solution and makes it easier to design new assays for emerging variants.
