How do I safely inactivate biohazardous flow-through material?
Always dispose of potentially biohazardous solutions according to your institution’s waste-disposal guidelines. Although the lysis and binding buffers in QIAamp, DNeasy, and RNeasy kits contain chaotropic agents that can inactivate some biohazardous material, local regulations dictate the proper way to dispose of biohazards. DO NOT add bleach or acidic solutions directly to the sample-preparation waste. Guanidine hydrochloride in the sample-preparation waste can form highly reactive compounds when combined with bleach.

RNeasy 96 BioRobot Kits
RNeasy 96 BioRobot Kits enable total RNA purification in 96-well format for BioRobot instruments from cultured cell samples and any tissue. Tissues are efficiently lysed and homogenized in QIAzol Lysis Reagent while cells are lyses in Buffer RLT. High-quality RNA is purified from tissues and cells using silica-membrane RNeasy 96 plates. Automated purification is performed using the BioRobot Universal System, which processes up to 96 or 192 samples per run followed by real-time RT-PCR setup. Tissue samples can be conveniently stabilized using Allprotect Tissue Reagent, and efficiently disrupted using the TissueLyser II. Nonfatty tissues can be stabilized using the RNAprotect Tissue Reagent.
RNeasy Universal Kits
The RNeasy Plus Universal Mini Kit integrates fast, convenient RNA purification with effective elimination of genomic DNA. Optimized protocols enable purification of high-quality RNA from any type of tissue, even difficult-to-lyse tissues. The kit includes QIAzol Lysis Reagent for lysing fatty tissue and other types of tissue and RNeasy spin columns for purifying high-quality RNA. The RNeasy Plus Universal Mini Kit can be automated on the QIAcube Connect. The RNeasy 96 Universal Tissue Kit enables total RNA purification in 96-well format from any tissue. Tissues are efficiently lysed and homogenized in QIAzol Lysis Reagent, and high-quality RNA is purified using silica-membrane RNeasy 96 plates. Manual purification is carried out using the QIAGEN Centrifuge 4-16KS and, optionally, the QIAvac 96 vacuum manifold. Automated purification using the related RNeasy 96 Universal Tissue 8000 Kit is performed on the BioRobot Universal System. EZ1 RNA Card
The EZ1 RNA Card is a preprogrammed card containing protocols for purification of total RNA or total nucleic acids from cells and easy-to-lyse animal and human tissues, and purification of total RNA from any type of human or animal tissue using EZ1 RNA Kits. These protocols provide both on-screen instructions for the user and operating commands for the BioRobot EZ1.
EZ1&2 RNA Tissue Mini Kit
The EZ1&2 RNA Tissue Mini Kit contains all required reagents and labware for automated purification of total RNA from up to 10 mg standard tissue samples using magnetic particle technology. Reagents are supplied in prefilled and sealed reagent cartridges, which ensures speed and convenience in loading the instrument.
The EZ1&2 RNA Tissue Mini Kit is automated with the EZ2 Connect (1–24 samples per run). This kit can also be used with the EZ1 Advanced XL (1–14 samples per run).
EZ1 DNA Investigator Cards
EZ1 DNA Investigator Cards are preprogrammed with protocols for purification of DNA from forensic and human-identity samples using the EZ1 DNA Investigator Kit on the EZ1 Advanced, EZ1 Advanced XL or BioRobot EZ1.
RNeasy Kits
RNeasy Kits are the gold standard for total RNA isolation. They provide fast purification of high-quality RNA from small to large amounts of cells, tissues, and yeast using silica membrane RNeasy spin columns or 96-well plates. Tissue samples can be conveniently stabilized using RNAprotect Tissue Reagent or Allprotect Tissue Reagent, and efficiently disrupted using a TissueRuptor II or TissueLyser II or LT system. The RNeasy 96 Kit enables high-throughput purification of total RNA from up to 96 cultured cell samples using silica membrane RNeasy 96 plates. A dedicated RNeasy QIAcube Kit enables automated purification of 1–12 samples on the QIAcube Connect.
RNeasy Protect Kits
RNeasy Protect Mini Kits enable stabilization of RNA in tissue samples, RNA and DNA in sorted or cultured cells, RNA in human saliva samples and RNA in bacterial samples. The RNeasy Protect Mini Kit and Bacteria Mini Kit include RNeasy spin columns for purifying up to 100 µg of high-quality RNA using silica-membrane technology. The RNeasy Protect Cell Mini Kit provides the RNeasy Plus Mini Kit for purification of total RNA. The RNeasy Protect Saliva Mini Kit includes the RNeasy Micro Kit, which purifies and concentrates total RNA using specialized RNeasy MinElute spin columns. The RNeasy Protect Mini, RNeasy Protect Cell Mini and RNeasy Protect Bacteria Mini Kits can be automated on the QIAcube Connect.
RNeasy Plant Mini Kit
The RNeasy Plant Mini Kit includes QIAshredder spin columns for homogenizing and filtering viscous plant or fungal lysates, and RNeasy spin columns for purifying up to 100 μg of high-quality RNA using silica-membrane technology. Purification can be fully automated on the QIAcube Connect. The kit can also be used in combination with a TissueRuptor or TissueLyser system, which provide efficient disruption and homogenization of plant samples.
RNeasy MinElute Cleanup Kit
The RNeasy MinElute Cleanup Kit enables cleanup and concentration of RNA from enzymatic reactions or other samples using specialized RNeasy MinElute spin columns based on silica-membrane technology. The kit can also be used to desalt RNA samples. Up to 45 µg RNA can be purified in a volume as low as 10 µl. Purification can be fully automated on the QIAcube Connect.
RNeasy Lipid Tissue Mini Kit
The RNeasy Lipid Tissue Mini Kit includes QIAzol Lysis Reagent for lysing fatty tissues and other types of tissue, and RNeasy spin columns for purifying up to 100 µg of high-quality RNA. The kit can be automated using the QIAcube Connect. Tissue samples can be conveniently stabilized using RNAprotect Tissue Reagent (nonfatty tissues only) or Allprotect Tissue Reagent, and efficiently disrupted using a TissueRuptor or TissueLyser system.
RNeasy Fibrous Tissue Mini Kit
The RNeasy Fibrous Tissue Mini Kit includes proteinase K for removing abundant protein in fiber-rich tissue samples, and RNeasy spin columns for purifying up to 100 µg of high-quality RNA. The kit can be automated on the QIAcube Connect. Fibrous tissue samples can be conveniently stabilized using RNAprotect Tissue Reagent or Allprotect Tissue Reagent, and efficiently disrupted using a TissueRuptor or TissueLyser system. For larger samples, the RNeasy Fibrous Tissue Midi Kit (spin-column binding capacity of 1 mg RNA) is also available.
QIAquick Gel Extraction Kit
The QIAquick Gel Extraction Kit provides spin columns, buffers, and collection tubes for silica-membrane-based purification of DNA fragments from gels (up to 400 mg slices) or enzymatic reactions. DNA ranging from 70 bp to 10 kb is purified using a simple and fast bind-wash-elute procedure and an elution volume of 30–50 µl. An integrated pH indicator allows easy determination of the optimal pH for DNA binding to the spin column. The QIAquick PCR & Gel Cleanup Kit also provides buffers for purification of PCR products >100 bp and DNA of up to 10 kb. The procedure can be fully automated on the QIAcube Connect.
For optimal results it is recommended to use this product together with QIAvac 24 Plus.
QIAamp Virus BioRobot MDx Kit
The QIAamp Virus BioRobot MDx Kit provides automated viral nucleic acid purification on the BioRobot MDx using proven QIAamp technology. The fully automated procedure requires less than 2.5 hours, including bar code reading and complete process documentation, with no hands-on time during the run.
QIAamp Virus BioRobot 9604 Kit
The QIAamp Virus BioRobot 9604 Kit provides automated viral nucleic acid purification on the BioRobot 9604 using proven QIAamp technology. The fully automated procedure requires less than 2.5 hours for up to 96 samples, including bar code reading and complete process documentation, with no hands-on time during the run.
QIAamp Viral RNA Kits
QIAamp Viral RNA Kits simplify viral RNA purification from cell-free body fluids with fast spin-column, vacuum and plate centrifugation procedures. Viral RNA binds specifically to the QIAamp silica membrane, and pure viral RNA is eluted in either water or a buffer provided with the kit. Purification can be fully automated on the QIAcube Connect using the QIAamp Viral RNA Mini Kit or dedicated QIAamp Viral RNA Mini QIAcube Kit. Various options for automation of the QIAamp 96 Viral Kit on instruments including the QIAcube HT, the Fluent 780 from Tecan or the epMotion 5075V from Eppendorf support high to ultra-high throughput processing with minimal hands-on time.
QIAamp Viral RNA Mini and QIAamp 96 Viral RNA standard protocols can also be executed using the TRACKMAN Connected system, paired with PIPETMAN M Connected pipettes, both from Gilson. The TRACKMAN Connected system guides researchers through QIAamp Viral RNA Mini or QIAamp 96 Viral RNA protocols while automatically adjusting the Bluetooth-enabled PIPETMAN M Connected pipette settings. QIAamp RNA Blood Mini Kit
The QIAamp RNA Blood Mini Kit provides silica-membrane-based purification of cellular RNA from up to 1.5 ml of fresh, whole human blood stabilized with any common anticoagulant, such as citrate, heparin, or EDTA. After homogenization using the QIAshredder spin column, a fast spin-column procedure simplifies RNA purification. Purification can be fully automated on the QIAcube Connect.
QIAamp MinElute Virus Kits
QIAamp MinElute Virus Kits simplify viral DNA and RNA purification with fast spin-column and vacuum procedures. The kits use starting sample volumes of up to 0.2 ml and combine the selective binding properties of a silica-based membrane with flexible elution volumes of between 20 and 150 μl. The QIAamp MinElute Virus Spin process can be fully automated on the QIAcube Connect. The additional buffers and reagents in the QIAamp MinElute Virus Accessory are required for automation of the QIAamp MinElute Virus Spin procedure.
QIAamp DNA Kits
QIAamp DNA Kits provide silica-membrane-based nucleic acid purification from tissues, swabs, CSF, blood, body fluids or washed cells from urine. In addition, genomic and mitochondrial DNA can be purified from small amounts of fresh or frozen blood, tissue and dried blood spots. Mechanical homogenization is not required as the tissues are lysed enzymatically. DNA purification from 1–12 samples can be automated on the QIAcube Connect using the dedicated QIAamp DNA Mini QIAcube Kit. Purification of DNA using the QIAamp DNA Micro Kit and QIAamp DNA Mini Kit is also automatable on the QIAcube Connect.
QIAamp DNA Mini standard protocols can also be executed using the TRACKMAN Connected system.
QIAamp DNA Blood Kits
QIAamp DNA Blood Kits provide silica-membrane-based DNA purification from whole blood, plasma, serum and other body fluids. The kits are designed for a range of sample sizes from 200 μl up to 10 ml fresh or frozen human whole blood. QIAamp spin columns can be easily processed in a centrifuge or on vacuum manifolds. A convenient 96-well format using centrifugation enables purification of DNA for labs that need high-throughput DNA purification from blood, buffy coat, plasma, serum, bone marrow, lymphocytes and body fluids. A dedicated kit is also available for automated purification of 1–12 samples on the QIAcube Connect.
QIAamp DNA Blood BioRobot MDx Kit
The QIAamp DNA Blood BioRobot MDx Kit provides automated DNA purification on the BioRobot MDx workstation or the BioRobot Universal System using proven QIAamp silica-membrane technology. The fully automated procedure on the BioRobot MDx workstation requires less than 2.5 hours, including bar code reading and complete process documentation, with no hands-on time during the run.
PAXgene Blood DNA Kit
The PAXgene Blood DNA system consists of PAXgene Blood DNA Tubes for blood collection and stabilization, and the PAXgene Blood DNA Kit for DNA purification in a single-tube procedure.
EZ1&2 DNA Tissue Kit
The EZ1&2 DNA Tissue Kit contain all required reagents and labware for rapid, automated purification of DNA from up to 40 mg tissue samples using magnetic-particle technology. Reagents are supplied in prefilled and sealed reagent cartridges, which ensures speed and convenience in loading the instrument.
Protocols for automated purification of genomic DNA from a wide range of sample types using the EZ1&2 DNA Tissue Kit are provided in the handbook. These include buccal cells, cultured cells, dried blood and paraffin-embedded tissue sections.

DNeasy Plant Kits
The DNeasy Plant Kits provide fast and easy silica-based DNA isolation from plant samples in spin column format. Typical yields are 3–260 μg of high-quality DNA, depending on the samples used (e.g., wheat, maize, Arabidopsis, tomato, tobacco) and binding capacity of the DNeasy silica membrane. The DNeasy Plant Kits also provide silica-based DNA purification in a convenient 96-well plate format with typical yields of 1–15 μg DNA, depending on the plant species. DNA isolation from plant tissue is also automatable on the QIAcube Connect
Buffer RLT
Buffer RLT is a lysis buffer for lysing cells and tissues prior to RNA isolation and simultaneous RNA/DNA/Protein isolation. When following RNeasy Plus or AllPrep DNA/RNA procedures, Buffer RLT Plus should be used.
Blood & Cell Culture DNA Kits
Blood & Cell Culture DNA Kits provide gravity-flow, anion-exchange tips and buffers for efficient isolation of genomic DNA from a wide range of biological samples. The purified DNA is sized up to 150 kb with an average size of 50–100 kb.
The purchase of the Genomic DNA Buffer Set (cat.no. 19060) is required for yeast and bacteria samples.
QIAwave RNA Mini Kit
The QIAwave RNA Mini Kit is an eco-friendlier version of our standard RNeasy Mini Kit. The kit uses up to 60% less plastic and up to 57% less cardboard than our standard kit and offers waste tubes made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic that you can reuse throughout the procedure. QIAwave buffers also come as concentrates, reducing the amount of plastic by up to 90% per bottle. To save paper, there are no printed protocols in the kit. Instead, you can download the protocols you need from the resources list or by simply scanning the QR code inside the box lid. So, while the kit packaging and components of our QIAwave Kit may look different, it’s as easy to use as the RNeasy Mini Kit, and the chemistry and performance are identical.
Please be aware that you will need sterile glass bottles to store the reconstituted buffers.
