Meet the QIAGENers

The power of people-first leadership

“Leadership is about creating space for others to thrive and making sure they have the tools, trust and support to do it.”
Julia Buckler, Head of Assay Development & Manchester Site Head

Julia Buckler’s QIAGEN journey began 18 years ago when she joined DxS, a small company later acquired by QIAGEN. Back then, she was eager to move into genetics, gaining hands-on lab experience and seizing opportunities that came with working in a close-knit team.

Over the years, Julia’s career evolved from lab organization to product development as a Technical Lead, then to leading the qPCR group and eventually overseeing the entire Manchester Assay Development team in late 2019. She reorganized teams, streamlined operations and guided the lab safely through COVID-19, splitting into Team A and Team B while ensuring business continuity – all while expecting her second child.

A culture built on trust and care

That belief in strong, inclusive leadership is personal for Julia. Years earlier, she lost her arm – an event that could have been a turning point in her career. Instead, QIAGEN’s response was compassionate and empowering.

Her managers asked what she needed, listened without judgment and gave her the same opportunities as before.

“They treated me no differently, and made sure I had every chance to succeed. I never felt held back or defined by what had happened.”

Creating the space for others to thrive

Today, Julia leads both the assay development department and the Manchester site. She’s committed to making QIAGEN a great place to work, whether that’s through employer branding, creating welcoming spaces, supporting sports and charity initiatives or championing diversity, sustainability and new parent groups.

She also collaborates with local universities to inspire future scientists and brings students into her team to spark fresh ideas.

“Everyone here has a voice, and my role is to make sure they’re heard, supported and able to do their best work.”

For Julia, leadership isn’t just about setting direction; it’s about creating the conditions for others to thrive.

At QIAGEN, she makes leadership possible.
