What is qPCR?

Quantitative PCR, also referred to as qPCR or real-time PCR is a reaction in which the accumulation of the amplicon product can be monitored in real-time as the PCR proceeds, usually as a fluorescence intensity. The fluorescent signal generated during the exponential phase of the PCR reaction is directly proportional to the amount of amplicon produced, and is therefore a powerful method for quantitating the amount of template DNA used in the reaction. Compared to end-point PCR approaches, qPCR provides superior sensitivity, dynamic range, and precision, while eliminating the need for post-PCR sample processing.
