April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

I Ask champions the message that asking for justice and closure is the fundamental right of every victim or survivor. This April, we want to raise awareness and commit to continue empowering forensic scientists to tackle specialized, challenging sexual assault investigations with the aim of bringing closure to the survivors.

Efficient separation of sexual assault samples

Rapid, reliable quantification of total human and male DNA

Quantification of your samples prior to downstream STR typing confirms that sufficient DNA is present for further testing, indicates whether it contains inhibitors, and predicts the success of your STR analyses. The newly developed Investigator Quantiplex Pro RGQ Kit provides reliable information on the degradation status of both male and human DNA using quantitative real-time PCR. It is particularly beneficial when analyzing sexual assault samples where low levels of the male perpetrator’s DNA could be highly degraded in a high background of a female victim's DNA.

Confident tissue source identification in forensic casework 

Attribution of a DNA profile to a specific cell or tissue type can enable forensic investigators to address source-level questions often posed by the judiciary. Recent research efforts have led to the development of new assays for identification of body fluids based on epigenetic markers such as DNA methylation. Analysis of DNA methylation by Pyrosequencing on the PyroMark Q48 Autoprep enables accurate and reliable sperm identification in sexual assault samples.

DNA methylation – leading into the future of forensic casework analysis 

Biological samples collected at crime scenes have potential to be used for predicting the age of the individuals from whom the samples originated. In cases with no DNA profile match against a database, such information could be critical for providing additional intelligence for criminal investigations. Determining whether the biological material originates from semen can be extremely informative in sexual assault cases.
