World Hepatitis Day

World Hepatitis Day 2023

Each year, viral hepatitis kills more people than HIV/AIDS and malaria combined. Worldwide, more than 350 million people are living with hepatitis. Prompt detection and treatment of viral hepatitis can help stop the spread and save lives.

Did You Know?
Nobel-prize winning scientist Dr. Baruch Blumberg discovered the hepatitis B virus (HBV), and created both a diagnostic test and vaccine. Now, World Hepatitis Day is celebrated each year on July 28, Dr. Blumberg’s birthday.
  • 1.3 million deaths from hepatitis B and C each year Worldwide, 290 million people with viral hepatitis don’t know they have the disease
  • 90% of people living with hepatitis B that don’t know that they have the disease
  • Hepatitis C is curable
  • Hepatitis B is treatable and can be managed, but less than 1% of patients with HBV are treated
The theme of World Hepatitis Day 2023 is “Hepatitis Can’t Wait.” According to the WHO, a person dies every 30 seconds from a hepatitis-related illness. We know that expanded access to testing and treatment are key to saving lives. That’s why the CDC recommends one-time hepatitis C testing for all adults, and additional screening in pregnant individuals and people with other risk factors.

“The fact that millions of cases of viral hepatitis are undiagnosed is what makes this disease one of our most important global health opportunities.”

Outrunning viruses with molecular tools

At the end of 2021, Lancet Laboratories in South Africa made a startling discovery – the new SARS-CoV-2 variant Omicron, which soon gained worldwide attention. Dr. Allison Glass, clinical virologist at Lancet Laboratories, says that what is most fascinating to her, are the multitude of viruses out there and how an entity that can’t even carry out a life cycle on its own can cause so much destruction.

Timely, accurate diagnosis is important in managing infectious diseases like hepatitis. “I think the world’s eyes have been opened to the possibilities,” says Dr. Richard Dawood. “The value of accurate diagnosis, and particularly fast, accurate diagnosis has really become clear.” See how his practice gets the high-throughput results his patients need.

A revolutionary diagnostic solution

When it comes to hepatitis, critical decisions for patient care are dependent on accurate and timely clinical laboratory results. Learn more about the NeuMoDx, which offers assays for HBV and HCV, and discover how your lab can achieve the fast results you need.
