Let's not forget that tuberculosis (TB) takes 1.5 million lives each year, and many of these deaths can be avoided (1). It's time to stop this. This World TB Day, we aimed to draw the world's attention to TB and highlighted how local initiatives created a ripple effect for global change in the fight against TB.



 
This World TB Day, we joined forces with local communities and international experts to raise awareness about TB. By collaborating closely, we aimed to amplify our message and demonstrate how grassroots initiatives can have a worldwide effect on combating TB.

  • Prof. Adrian Martineau
    Prof. Martineau is Clinical Professor of Respiratory Infection and Immunity at Queen Mary University of London. He is a respiratory physician with a research interest in tuberculosis. His work combines laboratory investigation and clinical studies investigating diagnosis and prevention of latent TB infection. He leads the Micro-LTBI consortium, a programme of work investigating a potential microbiological biomarker of latent TB infection.

  • Dr. Erica Chimara
    Dr. Chimara is a researcher with experience in TB and mycobacteriosis diagnosis, surveillance, quality management, biosafety and laboratory network management Master of Science from the University of São Paulo PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the Federal University of São Paulo MBA in Health Innovation Management from Institute Butantan.

  • Dr. Kwame Shanaube
    Dr. Shanaube is a clinical epidemiologist, currently serving as the deputy Director of Research at Zambart in Zambia and as an honorary lecturer at the University of Zambia School of Public Health. She has almost 20 years of experience working in TB/HIV public health research. She has led and managed many studies being overall/country PI of 8 studies including those focused on TB infection epidemiology, prevention and diagnostics.

  • Dr. Daniela Maria Cirillo
    Daniela Maria Cirillo MD, PhD, Clinical Microbiologist, Head of the Emerging Bacterial Pathogen Research unit and Deputy Director of the Division of Immunology, Transplant and Infectious Diseases at IRCCS San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan. Head of TB Supranational reference laboratory. Her research focus is on mechanisms detection of drug resistance in MDROs of nosocomial origin and mycobacteria, ECOFFs definition for new antibiotics and application of NGS based technology in clinical microbiology.

  • Dr. Marina Tadolini
    Dr. Tadolini is currently an Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases, at the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, Italy. In the last 15 years, she worked as Senior Consultant for Global Tuberculosis Programme at World Health Organization, Geneva in the field of National TB Prevalence Surveys, and since 2009 she is a member of the WHO Global Task Force on TB Impact Measurement.

  • Dr. Sonia Qasba

    Dr. Qasba is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and infectious diseases.

    After fellowship, she joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, as a medical officer with a focus on international clinical studies involving HIV and tuberculosis. She worked closely with leading principal investigators of clinical studies within the AIDS Clinical Trial Network and was a co-author of major publications that changed practice for delivery of care to patients co-infected with HIV and TB. She was then appointed Medical Director of the Tuberculosis program for the Montgomery County, Maryland Health Department.

    Currently, Dr. Qasba is a practicing hospitalist, pediatrician and has lead the covid response for over the last 3 years at a hospital in Maryland.

    Dr. Qasba is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and infectious diseases.
  • Dr. Michael Hodgson
    Michael Hodgson, MD, MPH, Is board-certified in internal medicine and occupational and environmental medicine. After residency, he worked for CDC/NIOSH, the Universities of Pittsburgh and Connecticut, the Veterans Health Administration, and OSHA. In each of these, he has dealt with TB outbreaks.

  • Dr. Amy J. Behrman

    Dr. Behrman is a Professor in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where she has served as Occupational Medicine Director for more than 25 years. Her practice and academic interests focus on healthcare personnel, occupational infections, nosocomial infection prevention, vaccine preventable diseases, and adult immunization programs. She is responsible for clinical care, surveillance and immunization programs for healthcare personnel, research staff, and veterinary staff at a large academic medical center. Her practice manages TB screening and LTBI treatment for healthcare personnel and primate workers. Dr. Behrman was elected to Penn’s Academy of Master Clinicians in 2018. A fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the American College of Occupational & Environmental Medicine (ACOEM), she is a past Chair and current Board Member of the ACOEM Medical Center Occupational Health Section.
