Kerstin, Senior HR Manager Europe
"After education as International Management Assistant and Business Correspondant for English and French, I studied European Business Administration.
My first job after university was as a Human Resource Trainee for a small engineering service provider in the automotive industry with a focus on recruitment and Business English training for the employees. I started with QIAGEN in February 2007 as Junior HR Generalist supporting the IT and part of the R&D department in Germany in all HR-related matters.
After 18 months, I switched to support Sales & Marketing, at first mainly in Germany and Austria. Throughout the years, I also provided remote HR support to the entities in Spain, the Nordic countries, and the Middle East as well as on an interim basis to Italy and Turkey. Beside that, my responsibility was to build up the apprenticeship progam at our Hilden site from hiring the first apprentices until they accomplished their apprenticeship after 3 years, and the project became part of daily business. In October 2011, I took over my first managing responsibility as HR Manager Sales & Service Solutions Central Europe, Spain and Emerging Regions EMEA. During the time of reorganization of the HR department, I got the chance to lead the European HR team (excluding Germany) for about a year until we established our current structure. Supporting around 15 countries at a time with lots of changes within QIAGEN was a huge challenge, but also a great learning experience.
In my current position as Senior HR Manager, I am leading a team of HR Generalists that support our Business Areas MDx and Life Sciences in Germany as well as Commercial Operations in Germany, Austria, Middle East, and Russia. In addition, I continue in my European responsibility for the area of Commercial Operations, supporting the implementation of pan-European projects, reorganizations and all other HR related matters across all the different sites together with the European HR team. Working on HR projects but also dealing with the HR side of acquisitions and integrations are also part of my role.
When I was interviewed for my first role at QIAGEN, I was told that you learn as much in 2 years at QIAGEN as you would learn in 10 in another company – and for me this really turned out to be true. Throughout the years, with the growth and development of QIAGEN, I very often got the chance to take on responsibility for new areas and projects and thus could experience work on a huge variety of topics. Working together with colleagues from all over the globe on a daily basis is an aspect I really enjoy as well, especially as the people are very nice and extremely motivated."
Anke, Director Research & Development, Waltham
"Currently I am working as a Director R&D, Head of NGS Consumables, based in our site in Waltham, USA. I lead a department which focuses on developing next-generation sequencing technologies, a method that makes decoding genetic information much easier, faster, and cheaper than conventional methods.
I joined QIAGEN in 2004 after obtaining my PhD from the University of Bochum in Germany. I started here as a scientist, which is a typical entry position after finishing a PhD.
If you are ambitious and motivated, QIAGEN offers you the possibility to create your own career. After 3 years of working as a scientist, I got the chance to lead my own group of scientists. 3 years later my responsibilities changed again as I was promoted to the Head of IVD Competence Center in Hilden. QIAGEN supports me in every phase of my professional career by offering internal and external trainings.
Now I am very happy to take the next step and spent some time in our Waltham site to build up and lead the NGS team. I really appreciate the chance to develop high quality products in cross-functional and global teams. This is what makes it exciting to work at QIAGEN."
