The JCSG Core Suites are split into 4 screens of 96 unique conditions in either deep-well blocks (1.5 ml per well) or tubes (10 ml), and are the result of analyzing over 500,000 high-throughput crystallization experiments performed at the JCSG. The 384 crystallization conditions that provided the highest hit rates in initial screening were chosen to form the screens.

Obtaining protein crystals requires screening of a wide array of crystallization
conditions. Starting with different sets of initial screening conditions, the search
for a suitable condition can be narrowed down by further developing conditions centered
around a promising condition that provides crystalline forms (i.e., “a hit”). The
Core Suites include three different precipitant types (salts, organics, and polymers)
used within three screening strategies (see table “Screening strategies”). The 384 crystallization conditions
in the JCSG Core Suites offer a rapid and wide sampling of crystallization space.
