Metabolism comprises catabolism and anabolism. Catabolism breaks down organic compounds to generate energy (ATP) through a series of chemical reactions. Anabolism uses energy to construct components of cells such as proteins and nucleic acids. Any factor affecting a metabolic process, including absorption, excretion, enzymes, coenzymes, vitamins, hormones, cytokines, growth factors, minerals, and cofactors, can cause metabolic diseases.
