Why is cancer research important to you?

We asked cancer researchers and QIAGENers why cancer research is important to them – here are their stories. Cancer affects our lives in many ways and it is why we are committed to working together. We’d like to know what makes cancer research important to you - let us know.

I am glad able to be part of the community battle against cancer. WHO data showed there were 9.6 million cancer deaths and 18.1 new cases alone in 2018. Even more concerning is one in five men and one in six women worldwide develop cancer during their lifetime. Many people lose their loved ones due to cancer, including me. The cancer research community significantly improves cancer patients' quality of life, diagnostics, and eventually treatment methods. I would like to thank our community's continuous effort, and believe one day we can win the battle together.

Cancer research is vital to me as it makes an impact on future diagnosis and treatment in generations to come. Seeing people around me getting diagnosed with cancer and having their life eaten away was a pain. I hope to contribute, even if it is the slightest influence, to a greater good for humankind through my daily work with QIAGEN.

Just a few weeks before the Christmas holidays of 2019, my father-in-law was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer, with the oncologist prognosing a 3–6 months life expectancy. This piece of crushing news affected everyone in our family, as there weren't any detectable signs from his earlier years of health check-ups. There is still much work to be done in cancer research, especially in those that are hard to detect, such as hepatocellular carcinoma. I strongly believe that QIAGEN as a company, has all the right tools that can help global cancer researchers to accelerate their work in improving tumor biomarker detection, towards improving the outcomes of cancer patients. This is what motivates me to work here at QIAGEN.

Cancer is a global problem, doctors and scientists around the world are conducting cancer research studies to find better ways for early detection, prevention and treatment of cancer. A lot of diagnostics technologies and drugs used in this market come from cancer research: for example, circulating tumor cells, tumor mutation burden, and immunotherapy. With the addition of personalized healthcare, cancer research is even more powerful as it helps to identify patient profiling and give the best treatment plan as well as it will offer the hope of controlling even advanced disease in the long term.

Cancer occurrence is more prevalent now than ever. The number keeps increasing even with advancement in treatments. Cancer is a silent killer and symptoms surface when it has progressed to a later stage. I have lost both grandfathers to late-stage cancer, which left a huge impact on my family for a long time. We need a better understanding of cancer through research in order to equip ourselves better to fight this villain. Cancer research is therefore important to understand the mechanisms involved in cancer development for improved and effective solutions to prevention, early diagnosis and treatment options.

Cancer is no stranger to us. Fighting cancer is a tough process not only for the patient but their loved ones too. Every day, cancer continues to devastate lives. Fortunately, over the past few decades, cancer survival rates have improved tremendously, thanks to the efforts of scientists in studying cancer and translating the discoveries into advances and cures. I am grateful to be part of the community contributing to the fight against cancer. Every small step now could become a giant leap for cancer cure in near future. Let’s not stop making improvements in life possible.
